Clemens Mechanical Weeder System

Mechanical weeder systems and under-vine cultivators are not a one-size-fits-all product. Modern systems can be incredibly sophisticated and before choosing a make or model, growers need to think about what they are trying to achieve.

Designed to deal well with hardy weeds, the Clemens is the most effective, robust and comprehensive mechanical weeder system available to growers in the UK, making it ideal for use in organic and biodynamic vineyards and orchards.

One of the more premium options on the market, the Clemens mechanical weeder has been designed and built to suit fruit and vine growers who need to be able to do everything in just one pass, and vineyard managers often notice that the Clemens will do a more thorough job, with the effects lasting noticeably longer.

Clemens Tool Carriers and Frames

Growers first need to select a suitable tool carrier from which to mount one or several of the wide range of mechanical weeder implements on offer – see the section below.

The SB2 is available for working widths from 1.74m to 3.2m, depending on the equipment attached. The SB2 frame can be front- or rear-mounted and can be hydraulically adjusted to the row width.

Hydraulic requirement:1x double-acting
Weight without attachments:about 175 kg
Length x width x height:about 700 x 1050 x 740 mm (Outside edges of bars)
Three-point category:Cat. 1

A robust solution for narrow alleys, the SB Compact frame is also either front- or rear-mounted and covers three different working width ranges between 1.48m and 2.52m.

Hydraulic requirement:1x double-acting
Weight without attachments:about 150 kg
Length x width x height:about 700 x 800 x 740 mm (Outside edges of bars)
Three-point category:Cat. 1

Developed for extra wide rows, the SB Orchard frame covers row widths between 3m to 4.5m, depending on the equipment attached. The SB Orchard can be front- or rear-mounted and can be hydraulically adjusted to the row width.

Hydraulic requirement:1x double-acting
Weight without attachments:about 175 kg
Length x width x height:about 700 x 2300 x 740 mm (Outside edges of bars)
Three-point category:Cat. 1

Growers can also opt for a mid-mounting frame which allows for multiple operations to be completed at the same time as the mechanical weeder, saving time and money. The basic frame with the column lifters is fixed and can be equipped with the currently required mechanical weeder implement. The frame can be attached to different tractors using the respective mounting brackets.

Clemens mechanical weeder tools

A versatile selection of mechanical weeder tools and accessories ensures that all Clemens systems can be suitably adapted to work in different conditions.

The Clemens Radius SL mechanical weeder cultivator blades effectively undercut the topsoil and cut the root structure of the weeds, while an optional rotary tiller incorporates the topsoil, acting like a small power harrow. With the wide range of mounting options, the blade weeder has been able to cope with the most diverse soil conditions, vegetation types and crop types worldwide for decades. There is also delicate sensor technology to ensure clean work around the vine.

Oil requirement:about 8 – 12 l/min per unit
Weight (without accessories):about 33.5 kg
Weight blade share+sensor rod:about 2.8 – 5.1 kg depending on length
Blade share/sensor rod lengths:about 370/500/620 mm
Working speed:up to 10 km/h

The Radius SL Plus offers all the advantages of the SL and even more, as in addition to the blade, other implements such as driven disks, a rotary cultivator and a swing-wing mower can also be mounted. Working speed is about 3 to 10 km/h depending on the tool being used and blade share/sensor rod lengths are about 500/620 mm.

The easily adjustable ground-driven Finger Roller, which is available with up to three discs, can also provide efficient weed control and is usually the machine of choice, especially on steep slopes, because it leaves no edge that can develop into a water channel.

Ideal for young plants, or plantations with very crooked vines, the Finger Hoe gently removes soil and weeds directly around the vine. A clean result can be achieved and it prevents an island from forming around the vine even if the sensor rod of the Radius SL or Radius SL Plus is set to the maximum.
