We were pleased to launch the new Felco 834 cordless handset at this year’s National Fruit Show on Wednesday 5 November and again at the Vineyard and Winery Show on Wednesday 19 November, both held at the Kent Showground. These events gave growers and vineyard teams the chance to handle the new unit and see its range of features.
The new Felco 834 handsets drew a lot of interest at the shows, and it is easy to see why. Lightweight, powerful and designed with the needs of professional growers firmly in mind. From long battery life to improved blade durability and a new safety system, the handset brings several updates that make day-to-day pruning easier and more efficient.
Weighing just 980 grams, the lightweight Felco 834 has been designed for professional pruning of trees (34mm), vines (30mm), or trimming hooves (40mm). Each handset comes with two 14.4V, 3.0Ah batteries, which last approximately 12 hours each, providing extended operational time for intensive pruning tasks.
While primarily designed as a wireless unit, users who want to make the handset even lighter, or are looking for a better balance, can opt to attach the 1.5m extension cable and carry the battery in a pouch or pocket.
The new 843s also include Felco’s breakthrough safety feature, its Cut Shield technology. This patent-pending material is designed to prevent accidental injuries by deactivating the handset when the blade comes into contact with the skin of the user, whether they have bare skin or are wearing the specially designed Felco gloves included with the handset. This not only serves as an added layer of safety but maintains the superior cutting performance for which Felco is known.
Another key feature of the 834s is the F-GOLD coated blades. Made from an alloy of gold and cobalt, these blades are twice as durable as standard titanium coatings, meaning blades stay sharper and more efficient for longer. The surface reduces sap and residue build-up for easy cleaning and lowers friction for easier, faster pruning, which in turn is said to extend the battery life.
The handset has been designed to give professionals a tool that can handle varied work. There is also an LCD display to monitor the tool status and an integrated LED light that can be switched on when working in low light. The brushless motor provides steady power throughout use, and the overall balance of the handset is good, with an ergonomic feel that helps reduce fatigue.
Each unit is supplied in a strong case that includes conductive gloves in size large, a maintenance bag with a sharpening tool, a grease pump with bio-based grease, a Torx screwdriver, a holster with belt and battery pouch, a 13mm spanner, an Allen key, the extension cable (1.5 m/4.9 ft), and two 14.4V, 3.0Ah batteries.
